Project Overview
In this project, you and your child will create an interactive story in Scratch Jr. Your child will learn how to make characters move, talk, and interact with each other, allowing them to bring their story to life!
Blocks and Features Used
- Yellow (Start): Start on Tap
- Blue (Motion): Move, Jump
- Purple (Looks): Say, Hide, Show
- Orange (Control): Wait
- Red (End): End
Step-by-Step Guide
Setting Up the Story:
- Open Scratch Jr on your device.
- Start a new project and choose a background for your story.
Adding Characters:
- Select characters for your story from the library.
- Place the characters on the background.
Making Characters Talk:
- Use the Purple (Looks) block to add dialogue to your characters.
- Drag the Say block and type in what you want the character to say.
Making Characters Move:
- Use the Blue (Motion) blocks to make characters move.
- Drag the Move block and choose the direction and distance.
Adding Interaction:
- Use the Orange (Control) block to add pauses between actions.
- Drag the Wait block and set the time before the next action.
Creating Interactions:
- Have characters talk to each other by arranging the dialogue blocks.
- Make characters move towards each other using the Move block.
Testing Your Story:
- Tap the characters and dialogue blocks in sequence to see your story unfold.
Extend and Customize
- Add Background Music: Use the Green (Sound) blocks to add music or sound effects to your story.
- Create Choices: Use Repeat blocks to create branching storylines where the user can make choices.
- Design New Characters: Encourage your child to draw their characters on paper and scan them into Scratch Jr.
Encouragement
Encourage your child to experiment with different dialogues, movements, and interactions to create unique and engaging stories. Let them explore the creative possibilities in Scratch Jr and have fun telling their stories through this interactive project!
