Step-by-Step Guide: Nature Scene in Scratch Jr

Overview

In this project, we will create a vibrant Nature Scene in Scratch Jr. Children will design a forest setting with animals like frogs and birds, along with a bright sun shining overhead. This project encourages creativity and storytelling through coding.

Blocks and Features Used

  • Yellow: Start on Tap
  • Blue: Motion (Move, Rotate)
  • Purple: Looks (Say, Hide, Show)
  • Green: Sound (Pop)
  • Orange: Control (Wait)

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Setting the Scene

    • Use a green background for the forest.
    • Add a sun in the sky using the yellow circle shape.
  2. Creating the Frog

    • Choose a frog character from the library.
    • Use the blue Move block to place the frog in the scene.
  3. Animating the Frog

    • Use the orange Wait block to pause.
    • Add the purple Say block for the frog to "ribbit."
  4. Adding the Bird

    • Select a bird character from the library.
    • Position the bird on a branch using the blue Move block.
  5. Bird Animation

    • Make the bird flap its wings by using the blue Rotate block.
    • Add a pop sound using the green Pop block.
  6. Sunshine

    • Make the sun shine by using the purple Show block.
    • Add a message like "Good Morning!" with the purple Say block.
  7. Interactions

    • Experiment with tapping different characters to see their actions.

Extension Ideas

  • Create a day-night cycle by using the Switch Page block to change backgrounds.
  • Add more animals like squirrels or butterflies with unique movements.
  • Introduce storytelling by having characters interact with each other.

Encouragement

Encourage your child to explore different combinations of blocks to see how they affect the scene. Let them experiment with adding their own creative touches like flowers, trees, or even a flowing river. This project is all about having fun and bringing their imagination to life through coding!
