Overview
In this project, we will create a Racing Game in Scratch Jr where multiple characters will compete in a race with different speeds. Children will learn how to use motion blocks to make characters move at different speeds and create an exciting race.
Blocks and Features Used
- Yellow (Start blocks): Start on Tap
- Blue (Motion blocks): Move
- Orange (Control blocks): Repeat Forever
- Green (Sound blocks): Pop (optional for sound effects)
Step-by-Step Guide
Set Up the Scene:
- Open Scratch Jr on your device.
- Create a new project.
- Choose a background for the race track.
Add Characters:
- Add multiple characters for the race.
- Customize each character with different colors or features.
Code the Characters:
- Select a character.
- Use the Motion block (Move) to make the character move forward.
- Use the Control block (Repeat Forever) to keep the character moving continuously.
- Adjust the speed of each character by changing the number of steps they move.
Start the Race:
- Use the Yellow block (Start on Tap) to start the race.
- Tap on the Start button to begin the race.
Test the Race:
- Watch the characters race each other.
- Observe the differences in speed between the characters.
- Celebrate the winner at the finish line!
Extension Ideas
- Add obstacles on the race track for characters to avoid.
- Create power-ups that boost a character's speed temporarily.
- Introduce a scoring system to track wins and losses.
- Experiment with different backgrounds and characters for themed races.
Tips for Creativity and Experimentation
- Encourage your child to come up with creative character designs.
- Let them experiment with different speeds to see how it affects the race.
